A major challenge for a Member of Parliament from an opposition party in Malaysia is the issue of funding. My fixed expenses include office expenses and staff salaries (1 parliamentary researcher and 2 constituency assistants). I also have a team of paid interns working on constituency matters and national issues, such as the National Education Blueprint, electoral reform and the upcoming redrawing of electoral boundaries.
I hope to organize and sponsor several community programmes each year, in order to reach out to and empower the youth of Serdang in education and sports. These costs extend far beyond the scope of a MP’s salary and allowances.
I have also had to foot the bill for the legal costs of defending my Polling Agent, who has been wrongly accused of tampering with the postal ballot box during the early voting period before polling day. She has been charged in court and faces a jail term of up to 2 years, a fine of up to RM5,000 or both under Section 3(1)(i) of the Election Offences Act.The legal bill for defending her case is estimated to come up to RM30,000.
Thank you in advance for your generosity and support. I look forward to keeping in touch, and hope to update you on future news from both Parliament and my constituency of P102 Serdang.
With best regards,
Dr. Ong Kian Ming
